The twelve beauties of Jinling originate from the classic Chinese novel "Dream of Red Mansions". The novel covers all aspects of social life during the time it was written, and the screen depicts these daily routines which include weddings, funerals, clothing, and descriptions of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
The reverse side of the Chinese screen is adorned with a brief description of the novel by Cao Xueqin, and details about the 12 beauties themselves who were actual people living during the time the book was written. The descriptions are written in gold in both English and Chinese characters.
